About

The single, overriding characteristic that defines Firehouse is our willingness and ability to reinvent our business model to offer the best product mix at the best price for our clients. This excerpt from our mission statement is key: "It is our goal to not only acknowledge the constant changes in our industry, but to embrace them and therefore be at the forefront of the visual imaging business." The history of Firehouse began long before we were a commercial printer. We took our name from our original building which was an active fire station for 75 years. Indianapolis Fire Station #11 was opened in 1896. It served the fire department for 70 years. Its history encompassed horsepower, steam and diesel power. In 1971, the company at Station #11 relocated and the building and grounds were purchased by Fred and Peggy Abel. The Abels reported that there was still hay in the second-story loft when they took ownership. The old building was refurbished and the Abels opened Firehouse Colorlab later that year. Firehouse catered to the consumer and commercial photography markets offering a wide range of services. Our reputation as the premier commercial photo lab in Indiana began. Fast-forward 18 years and the photo lab industry was changing. The consumer market was moving away from our specialized services and the commercial market demanded more specialization. Firehouse was at a cross-roads and needed to evolve. The Abels decided to sell the business to brothers Tim and Terry Corman. Firehouse retained what consumer business it could and aggressively targeted commercial print clients. The Cormans purchased their first Macintosh computer in 1990. Workstations soon supplanted darkrooms and a digital imaging department was born. Tim Corman left to pursue other business interests and Terry's wife Sally came on board to run the front counter. Firehouse changed from a small consumer photo lab in the 1980's to a wide-format, commercial printer in the 1990's. We were early adopters of digital imaging equipment and remain on the leading edge of technological advances. That business model continues to serve us well as we pursue efficiencies in every area of production. While we were known as wide-format experts, we gained valuable experience in small format during this time when we expanded our client offerings to include digital prepress and sheet-fed 2- and 4-color work. In 2003 we came to the conclusion that the business had outgrown Fire Station #11. We found a new home with the needed space and modernized infrastructure. We broadened our scope to not just regional, but global commercial accounts. As part of our global expansion, Firehouse opened a European facility in the Netherlands in 2011 which gives our clients a unique opportunity to advance their
