I believe that a piece of furniture should reflect something about the owner. I invite the client to collaborate in the creative process. Initially, I prefer to meet the client, if possible, in the setting where the piece will be placed so that I can garner some sense of his or her interests and tastes in addition to the functional requirements for the project. With these initial impressions in mind, I will produce several sketches. At a second meeting, beyond listening to the client’s thoughts regarding the designs, I encourage him or her to take part in the creative process by making suggestions or further requests which I will then attempt to incorporate as we move toward a semi-final design. I say “semi-final” because I work more like a sculptor than a cabinetmaker; the design often evolves as the work proceeds. While function proposes the work, beauty, integrity and communication with and about my client is the desired outcome. Finally, I sign each piece and promise that I will not duplicate it.
